How much does product photography cost?

Updated August 2026

Product photography is priced per image, not per hour, and the range is wide: a studio shoot typically lands between $30 and $150 per finished image once shooting, styling and retouching are counted. Generating the same set from one existing photo costs from $0.19 per image. Below: what sits inside each number, and the cases where paying a photographer is still the better decision.

How much does product photography cost per image?

A professional studio product shoot generally costs $30–150 per finished image. The spread depends on styling, whether a model is involved, how much retouching each shot needs, and the day rate in your city. Most sellers hit the lower end only by shooting many SKUs in one session.

CostTypical rangeNotes
Photographer day rate$400–1,500/dayOften the largest single line
Studio hire$200–600/daySkipped if the photographer has their own
Model$300–1,000/dayOnly for on-model and lifestyle work
Styling and props$100–500Per set-up, not per shot
Retouching$5–40/imageUsually billed separately

What drives the per-image price of a traditional shoot

The rates above are typical market ranges rather than quotes; they move considerably by country and by category. Treat them as the shape of the cost, not a price list.

What does a studio product shoot actually include?

Shooting time, a styled set, lighting, and a set number of retouched finals — usually delivered in two to four weeks. Reshoots after delivery are billed again. The cost is front-loaded and per-session, so adding one product later means paying for another set-up rather than one more image.

Prodely plans, cost per generated image

Studio shots, on-model shots and background swaps all cost the same single credit, so the per-image figure does not change with what you generate.

Is AI product photography good enough for marketplace listings?

For most physical products, yes — marketplaces care about resolution, background and framing rules, all of which generated images can meet. Where it struggles is anything whose value is in fine surface detail a buyer will scrutinise: jewellery settings, watch dials, fabric weave, and precise colour matching on made-to-order goods.

When is hiring a photographer still the right call?

When the product is the hero of a brand campaign, when exact colour fidelity is contractual, when you need a specific human model consistently across a season, or when the category is high-consideration enough that buyers zoom in. A shoot also produces raw assets you own outright and can re-edit indefinitely.

The two are not exclusive, and the common pattern is not to choose. Shoot the hero products properly once, then generate the long tail — the variants, colourways and seasonal backgrounds that would never justify a session of their own.

How do you work out your own cost per image?

Take the number of SKUs you need photographed, multiply by the images each listing needs, and divide your quoted shoot total by that. Most sellers are surprised: the per-image figure falls sharply with volume for a shoot, and stays flat for credits, so the crossover depends entirely on catalogue size.

  • Count SKUs, then images per listing — marketplaces typically want 4–8.
  • For a shoot: (day rate + studio + model + styling + retouching) ÷ total finished images.
  • For credits: monthly price ÷ credits included, which is the per-image figure in the table above.
  • Add the cost of reshoots you expect over a year — this is where shoots quietly get expensive.

Common questions

Is there a free way to try AI product photography?

Prodely's free tier includes 50 credits on signup, which is 50 generated images, with full commercial usage rights — enough to test quality on a handful of real SKUs before committing.

Can I use AI-generated product photos commercially?

On Prodely, yes — every plan including Free carries full commercial usage rights for listings, ads and social. Terms differ by vendor, so check before assuming this is universal.

Do unused credits roll over?

Monthly plan credits refresh each billing cycle and do not roll over. Top-up credits on Enterprise plans never expire.

What resolution do generated images come out at?

Exports are print- and web-ready, up to 4K depending on plan — above the minimum resolution Amazon, Shopify and Allegro require for listing images.
